As an AV project manager, you know how tricky it can be to continuously deliver successful audio visual integration solutions. The planning has to be right, the tools have to be industry standard, and your company’s best practices must be followed to a T. But have you given enough attention to whether you’ve hired the right staff?

To ensure all aspects of your project are dealt with in an effective manner, you must hire skilled AV technicians. World-class audio visual integration is achievable only when you have the right people designing and implementing an AV system with conscientious care. If you rush to hire a team, you’re putting both your AV projects and your company’s reputation at risk.

The Pressures of Hiring for Global Projects

Many AV companies are taking advantage of the new normal of the gig economy to make their solutions available to international clients.

While the global market means more growth for your AV company, it also means unique new challenges when it comes to hiring in locations you’re unfamiliar with. You may need to hire on short notice as well.

One of two things can happen in situations like this: either you fly down internal technicians from your company or you hire whatever freelance technicians you can find in the area. The former is often a costly option, so you opt for the latter and tap the local freelance market. But the freelance market is vast and includes both entry-level and veteran technicians. You must be careful not to just hire any technicians you come across; otherwise, you risk onboarding unqualified technicians who are just looking to make a quick buck.

And we’re sure you know of at least one instance where unqualified technicians have led to strife throughout a project. Poor (or unfinished) installations, messy administration, and lack of proper work apparel (i.e., no company logo t-shirts) are just a few examples of repercussions of rush hiring.

No Communication Means No Quality

Whether you’re going to hire freelance technicians or not, you need to be on the lookout for professionals who exhibit the trait of excellent communication. This skill is actually one of the top three traits defining the best audio visual integration professionals, and for good reason. The quality of your AV project’s finished product depends on communication.

Just think about all the aspects of your project that are affected by poor communication and you’ll understand what we’re getting at. No regular updates from freelancers means you lack vital information you need to present to clients and assure their continued buy-in at each major stage of your project. Not to mention, your company is in the dark about whether it’s on track for project completion and whether it’s being completed according to industry standards.

No communication also means late invoicing and arguments over overpriced quotes for work you’re not even sure was adequately installed. To put it more precisely, lack of communication means more headaches for you in terms of overall administration of an AV project.

Your Company’s Reputation Is at Stake

Ultimately, you must make sure you have the right staff for your audio visual integration projects. If you don’t, it can result in projects that reflect poorly on your company’s reputation.

Do you want to be known as the company that delivered an AV system in a way that was inadequate, unprofessional, and unsafe? Do you want to be known as the company that was constantly at odds with its unqualified onsite workers? Just as accomplished AV systems are made possible by ensuring interoperability between all its individual components, your company must ensure it’s working in concert with its technicians.

The right staff is crucial. Your technicians are an extension of your company and its reputation. Make certain you’re well aware of how to effectively find and hire top freelancers for your AV projects.
